- Daniel Rubenstein, Owner & Master Dog Trainer

Daniel Rubenstein
Owner & Master Dog TrainerDuring the summer of July 1999, Dan was employed with Andersen Consulting in New York City and assigned to a systems engineering project in Chicago. While working on the project, Dan enrolled his St. Bernard, Sydney, with a daycare service because of the long and tedious hours that were required of him at work. Although Dan has been a dog guardian since the age of 6 years old, he had never required any type of commercial services for his dogs. Family was always around to care for the pets. However, while living independently in Chicago with his dog, he could not rely on family or friends to care for his young and rambunctious 160 pound dog. Dan decided to use a Dog Daycare service that would pick-up and drop-off. They were reputable and had been recommended by other pet parents in the neighborhood. Sydney loved going to daycare and for about 2 months everything went very smoothly with the service. The service would pick him up in the morning, take him to a designated outdoor play area, and drop him off at night. Then in July the weather really started to get too hot for his dog to go to daycare everyday. St. Bernard's are cold weather, Swiss mountain dogs. Out of concern, Dan contacted the owner of the daycare service and all parties agreed that it would be best that Sydney only be allowed only to go outside of the apartment to go to the bathroom and then quickly returned back inside to the air conditioned apartment.
July 30th, 1999, was one of the hottest days in Chicago history. The heat index that day was close to 114 degrees Fahrenheit. For some reason that is still unknown to Dan to this day, one of the dog daycare company's employees decided to pick up Sydney that day and take him to daycare without Dan's permission. Very early the next morning, Sydney died due to complications arising from heat stroke. The details of the story and how this happened are too gruesome and upsetting to retell, and at the time it was certainly difficult for Dan to understand how and why this would happen. As it turns out the reason was simple. The dog daycare service was poorly managed and therefore their employees were misguided and irresponsible which resulted in the ultimate negligent act of putting Sydney's life in jeopardy.
Dan was emotionally devastated after Sydney passed away. He could not eat, sleep, or work for a week. He confined himself to his apartment because he could not even look at another dog. His girlfriend at the time then forced him to go on a run in the park. During the run, all he noticed were the dogs and he stopped to meet every pet parent and dog that he could. It really wasn't much of a run at all. Instead while Dan was out, he realized that he wanted to work with dogs. It had taken the significant emotional event of Sydney's death for Dan to realize what he wanted to do with his life. He pledged to himself that when he got into the business, he would put the health and safety of the dogs for which he cared for first.
By December of 1999, Dan quit his his job with Andersen Consulting and started a dog walking and pet sitting business from his apartment. He went door to door and from dog park to dog park to build his business. He read books on dog behavior, training, and animal handling but mostly learned on the job. While he was operating his dog walking and pet sitting business, he was planning and building towards his next step, a dog daycare facility. In July of 2000, All for Doggies opened it's doors to the public and was the third dog daycare center in Chicago. Dan worked tirelessly with his staff to provide the absolute best care they could for the dogs. As dog people in the community learned of the new daycare center and learned of Dan's love for dogs and passion to run a solid, meaningful, and community oriented business, they flocked to him.
The business became a tribute to Sydney but it was very difficult for Dan to fill the emotional void that Sydney's death had left. In January of 2000, Dan decided to move forward and provide love and care for another St. Bernard, Mickey. At the same time, he adopted a 4 year old Rottweiler named Brandy. Mickey, Brandy, and Dan were inseparable. After all, Dan's business was all about the dogs so he could bring his to work with him. In late 2000 Dan met Alex Brooks, an accomplished Dog Trainer of 30 plus years in Chicago, and convinced him to open a training school at his store. Under Alex's tutelage Dan trained his dog Mickey for 2 straight years at least 30 minutes a day and most days for much longer. Dan learned basic obedience, advanced obedience, trick training, protection and poison training, agility, fly ball, tracking, sledding, and retrieving. Dan absorbed as much knowledge as he could and expanded his realm of mentors and exposure to different training methods by working with other Chicago area dog trainers as well. Dan has now been training dogs for as almost 10 years and specializes in behavioral training. He has trained thousands of dogs both here in Chicago and here in New York. He has worked with celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Bernadette Peters, and Kelly Rippa and in consultation with the New York City Animal Care and Control as well as the Mayor's Animal Alliance of New York. He has worked on film sets and photo shoots and prides himself on a results oriented training program. Dan will design a training program that best suits the needs of the pet parent and their dog.
Dan is married and lives in the neighborhood with his wife Abbe and their dog Shea, a pitbull mix they adopted together in July 2007. Dan is originally from Hartford, CT. His prior work experience includes Andersen Consulting and Sprint Technologies. He has a BBA in Finance from Emory University, and a Masters in Health Services Administration from Nova Southeastern University.

- Zoraya Garces, Retail Coordinator
-
Zoraya Garces
Retail CoordinatorZoraya is originally from New York City. She spent 5 years in Chicago before returning home in 2001. After several years of working in music stores (which she loved for the people and the perks – not for the pop music she had to push) she found herself looking for a job in a less “corporate” environment. Through a friend that has been working in the petcare industry for many years, she found a position at a local pet supply store. At the time, she was not prepared to realize how little she actually new about current pet practices or products. Fortunately, everyone at that store was knowledgeable and patient and shared what they knew. The immediate benefactor of her newly found wealth of information was her own animal, a little black cat named “Evil”. She had recently fallen ill, and by simply changing her diet, she improved not only in health, but also in appearance. Later on, she would be joined by “The Dude”, a skinny, stray ocicat mix that broke into her apartment and never left. From that store, she moved on into the dog daycare field. Her retail background led her to the role of product buyer and now Retail Manager. In a sense, her role has now been reversed as she is now educating her coworkers and our clients about the benefits of certain products. Zoraya says, “If I can help a dog by getting him on the right diet, it’s especially satisfying. Shopping for toys, treats, new clothes, leashes, collars, and more is just a plus.” Zoraya has been working at The Paw Stop since of May of 2006.
